Komikon is an annual convention for Philippine Comics or Komiks as we call it here in the Philippines. It showcases new and known Komiks, exhibits by first-time creators, and artworks for sale. A gathering for komik legends, creators, and fans.

Last November 19, my cousin invited me to attend a Comicon. I thought it will be another Marvel or DC Comic Convention, but I was wrong.

KOMIKON 2016

Komikon 2016 was held in Bayanihan Center in Mandaluyong. We paid an entrance fee of 100 Pesos. Just along the lobby, there are booths from sponsors and partners of the event, like National Bookstore and Warehouse Eight. There are also booths of participants that sell stickers/bookmarks of their work. Cute and Artsy-Fartsy.

Upon entering the doors of the hall, a huge crowd of illustrators, artists and their works were in front of us. It was filled with artworks that were on exhibit and for sale. There were a lot of things for sale, from stickers, pins, key chains, books, comics to shirts with beautifully crafted designs. From original creations to their own style of foreign works. I was very surprised by what I saw. I felt excited and astonished as I’m very interested in art and character design. We also saw free commissions and artists at work.

I also saw famous comic artists like Lyndon Gregorio of Beerkada, Pol Medina Jr. of Pugad Baboy and Manix Abrera of  Kikomachine. I used to read their works when I was in College. (Sorry for the blurry photos, I just took stolen shots of them. :P)

We left the event still amazed of the beautiful artworks we saw. It reminded me of my childhood, drawing anime characters, doodling on notebooks and making my imagination into lines and curves.

This event proves that Filipinos Artists can level in the international field. We just need to elevate their exposure and our support for them. Creative minds will surely change our perspective of life and able to visit a world of fun and discovery.
