NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES

The National Museum of the Philippines houses most of the artworks of our National Artists and heroes. I’ve been here before when I was a child but couldn’t remember most of it. So, I invited my girlfriend to visit it again, now that I have the mind of a mature individual maybe I’ll appreciate it even more. The museum doesn’t just have paintings and sculptures but also artifacts and cultural tools and crafts.

Unlike most people, I’m fond of visiting museums. Simply, because I like history. For me, History tells you something, not just the dates, the significant persons, or the specific places, but also lessons that we can learn from their mistakes and achievements. I’m also curious about how things were done before, that resulted to the things we encounter today.

ART SUNDAY

We visited the museum on a Sunday, as there were no entrance fees on that day. But recently, the museum announced that admission is now free every day except on Mondays when it is closed.

The museum is located at the center of Manila. It has two buildings, one is for the fine arts and the other for the archaeological artifacts and ethnographical stuff. These two buildings are not connected to each other, you’ll have to walk outside and cross the street.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

The first building was the former legislative building where the 1934 constitutional convention took place. After many years, it has now become the home of the works of Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Fernando Amorsolo, Napoleon Abueva, and many more. It showcases paintings and sculptures from the 18th century to the present like the burning of Sto. Domingo, Mother and Child, Governor Dasmarinas, and the like. But one of the eye-catching is the Spoliarium by Juan Luna which is located in the Main Gallery of the Museum.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY

The second building houses the archaeological artifacts from the Stone Age to the Spanish occupation, taxidermies, tools, and crafts of our indigenous brothers. The galleries here show more of the Filipinos’ history and culture.

Our visit here was fun and full of learning. It also proved that we are not a nation that is low and that can be chained, but a nation that can stand up against all odds and tell them that we are also existing in this world. That we are not silent and we have a voice. These artworks show that we have a culture and creativity. Let’s always keep in mind that we are people with ideals, a fighting heart, and a creative mind, and use this to help our nation to be great. Not just only through working and being part of the economy, but also through making great art.
