EASTERN VISAYAS

Eastern Visayas is a region in the Philippines consisting of 6 provinces namely Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. The region is known for its beautiful islands, waterfalls, and caves that are not yet known to a lot of tourists.

Traveling to this region has been a goal of mine since 2016.  I was thinking of canceling the trip because of a lack of funds. But it came to my mind that if I didn’t proceed, I might regret it. I have a lot of time and energy to do it. These things kept pushing me to continue with the trip. Fortune came, and I received funds. Lacking time to prepare a detailed itinerary, I went with a “Bahala Na” attitude along the way. This is not an efficient itinerary but somehow I was able to visit some of the places I wanted to see. I’ve visited 4 of the 7 provinces (Leyte, Biliran, Samar as a stopover, and Northern Samar) and they have already shown a lot of beautiful attractions.

The details above have been the fruit of my wandering. I traveled solo and on a tight budget. If you travel in a group, I think you can minimize the expenses. I haven’t visited a lot but I believe the experience I’ve faced meant a lot more, including meeting new friends and sharing stories with the locals.

The next entries will be detailed posts about the destinations I’ve visited in Eastern Visayas. It features the Kalanggaman Island, Biliran Province, and the Biri Rock Formations. I’m very excited to share them! Hoping to see your comments! Keep Chasing! 😀

NOTES:

  • One of the main transportation in the region is by vans. There are a lot of van operators including Van Van’s, D’ Turbanada Transport, and VS Grandtours. I suggest VS Grandtours as they are more organized and on time.
  • The best time to visit is during the dry season around February to May.
  • The three main islands: Leyte, Samar, and Biliran are connected by bridges so there’s no need to transfer by boat. The Biliran Bridge connects Leyte and Biliran, and the famous San Juanico Bridge connects Leyte and Samar.
  • There are airports in the region, one is in Catarman in Northern Samar and the main gateway is the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban.
  • The region can also be reached by RORO from Manila. Ride a bus that is bound for Samar or Leyte. This will cross the San Bernardino Strait between Matnog, Sorsogon, and Allen, Northern Samar.
